Details

In this online course you will learn to program with Java. Java is an object oriented programming language and is platform independent. Java is one of the most popular languages for building web applications and platforms.

You will start with an introduction to the basics of Java.

You will then become acquainted with the eight primitive data types in Java and learn to use them. The difference between primitive types and object types in Java is also discussed.

You learn to use arithmetic and logical operators in Java.

You will also learn the basics of string objects and wrapper objects. The different methods of comparing object types are discussed in detail.

Finally, the conditional and iterative control structures that are available within Java are discussed.

Result

After completing this course you will have the necessary basic knowledge to program in Java.

Prerequisites

You are familiar with the basics of software development.

Target audience

Java Programming: Introduction

  • Explore the Java programming language and reasons for its

  • long-standing popularity, such as platform independence,
  • robustness, and ease-of-use. Examine what bytecode is, how the JDK
  • is used by developers, how the JVM provides a sandbox environment
  • within which Java operates, and how the JRE defines the runtime
  • environment. Discover how to install Java on both Windows and
  • Macintosh-based systems, and also configure two of the most popular
  • Java IDEs, Eclipse and IntelliJ.

Java Programming: Working with Primitive Data Types

  • Explore the eight primitive types available in Java and how

  • variables of these types can be defined and used. Discover how to
  • create arrays of both primitive and object types, print their
  • contents, and access individual elements. Finally, examine how to
  • create enumerated types, commonly known as enums, and how to work
  • variables of such types.

Java Programming: Arithmetic & Logical Operations

  • Delve into the semantics of the logical and arithmetic operators
  • in Java and how small changes in an expression can lead to profound
  • changes in the output. Explore boolean operators, comparison
  • operators, and the use of parentheses. Discover the subtleties of
  • unary operators - pre- and post-increment and decrement - and how
  • they can yield code that is very concise, but somewhat hard to
  • understand.

Java Programming: Working with Strings & Wrapper Objects

  • Explore the basics of working with String objects, as well as
  • the eight wrapper object types that Java provides for working with
  • the corresponding eight primitive types. Discover how to initialize
  • strings and how the manner of initialization can influence the
  • comparison of strings. Look at the difference between the ==
  • operator and the .equals method while comparing object types,
  • including strings. Examine how to encapsulate primitive variables
  • into objects using the built-in wrapper classes.

Java Programming: Conditional Evaluation

  • Explore if-else and switch statements, which are the conditional

  • control structures available in Java. Examine simple if-constructs
  • that evaluate a condition and determine the flow of program control
  • accordingly. Then move to if-else statements, which provide a
  • ladder to very complex nested conditions. Such laddered if-else
  • statements can lead to egregious bugs, and that in turn leads to
  • the switch construct, which is perfect for branching program
  • control based on different values of a single variable. Discover
  • how to identify situations where the value of a single variable or
  • expression is being used to branch in several different directions,
  • and in such situations, how to pick the switch statement to avoid
  • bugs. How to identify situations where multiple variables need to
  • be taken into consideration and how to deploy nested if-else
  • control structures is also covered.

Java Programming: Iterative Evaluation

  • Examine the use of for loops, while loops, and do-while loops,
  • which are the iterative control structures available in Java. Start
  • with simple for-loops, the concept of the check expression, the
  • loop variable, and the update statement. Then move to enhanced
  • for-loops that are popular these days for iterating over arrays and
  • collections. Explore how to entirely short-circuit a loop using the
  • break statement, as well as how to short-circuit just this current
  • iteration using continue. How to do all of this in the context of
  • for loops, and while and do-while loops is covered. Discover how to
  • identify situations where for loops are preferable to while loops
  • (and vice versa), and how to carefully harness the great power of
  • the break and continue statements to avoid the pitfalls of infinite
  • loops and careless loop construction.

Course options

We offer several optional training products to enhance your learning experience. If you are planning to use our training course in preperation for an official exam then whe highly recommend using these optional training products to ensure an optimal learning experience. Sometimes there is only a practice exam or/and practice lab available.

Optional practice exam (trial exam)

To supplement this training course you may add a special practice exam. This practice exam comprises a number of trial exams which are very similar to the real exam, both in terms of form and content. This is the ultimate way to test whether you are ready for the exam.

Optional practice lab

To supplement this training course you may add a special practice lab. You perform the tasks on real hardware and/or software applicable to your Lab. The labs are fully hosted in our cloud. The only thing you need to use our practice labs is a web browser. In the LiveLab environment you will find exercises which you can start immediatelyThe lab enviromentconsist of complete networks containing for example, clients, servers, etc. This is the ultimate way to gain extensive hands-on experience.
